Sinh village is located about 10km east of Hue city center. Sinh painting village is actually also known as Lai An village, in Phu Mau commune, Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province. This place is famous for the traditional wrestling festival on the 10th day of the first lunar month every year. In addition, it is also famous for making folk paintings every Tet holiday in spring.

What Special about paintings of Sinh Village?
Making a standard painting of Sinh village requires the craftsman to be very skillful and meticulous because the painting is completely handmade.

In order to have a completed picture, it has to go through all 7 stages, from paper cutting, preparing the paper, printing on woodblocks, drying, coloring, and finally labeling.

The Paper is painted with a mother of pearl for toughness and color retention. Seashells are imported from Tam Giang lagoon, then the painter must carefully grind, mix with rice flour into a smooth layer, and spread evenly on the paper.
The finished paintings will be sparkling with scallop shells, backgrounded by rustic, seductive colors. And most importantly, when the picture reaches the user’s hands, it contains something sacred in the spiritual realm.
Each picture is a complete wooden mold, the painter uses black ink to smear on the woodblock, and then prints a rough picture with paper. We dry the painting to dry the ink, then carefully use all kinds of colors to paint the picture.
The unique feature of Sinh folk painting village is the color, each painting has its own character. The main colors are blue, red, black, yellow, and purple. The color layout is strictly regulated but not monotonous because of the bright colors and natural lines.

Paintings with people shapes: usually depicted a woman wearing a sodom with two servants standing on either side of the kitchen god in colorful clothes.
Object paintings in Sinh village often depict clothes, money, and burning tools for the underworld such as grandfather’s shirt, grandmother’s shirt, army shirt…
The animal paintings are similar to the other 2 types, drawings of poultry such as elephants, and 12 zodiacs to burn for people in the underworld.
