Overview of this Heritage
My Son Sanctuary is located at Duy Phu commune, Duy Xuyen District, Quang Nam Province, and far from Da Nang city nearly 69km southwest. My Son was probably constructed between the 4th and 14th centuries AD by the ancient Cham Kingdom. This is a Hindu temple complex consist of more than 70 structures. All important royal religious occasions had been organized at this temple complex. This place had also become the site to protect the Champa Kingdom when Tra Kieu capital (the capital of Cham in this time) had fallen. This is the reason why My Son has been one of the most remarkable historical sites in Central Vietnam.
The Sanctuary had been firstly explored by a French soldier in 1838, almost site was ruined. The main factor leads to ruin that the fall of Champa Kingdom. Before fall, the structure at My Son was the grandest and meaningful to the history of Hinduism in Southeast Asia. Therefore My Son Sanctuary plays a vital role as the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom. In 1937, the restoration had started. However, sadly, the war had destroyed it again, during the Vietnam war, many sites were further damaged by massive bombing. And in 1999, My Son Sanctuary is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
