The Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone
Vietnam DMZ was a demilitarized zone established as a dividing line between North and South Vietnam from July 1954 to 1976 as a result of the First Indochina War against reunited Vietnam.
During the Vietnam War (1955-1975), it became important as the battleground demarcation separating North from South Vietnamese territories.
The zone ceased to exist with the reunification of Vietnam on 2 July 1976, though the area remains dangerous due to the numerous undetonated explosives it contains. We will explore some highlights of the Vietnam DMZ such as
Horror Highway (The street of horror)
“The Highway of Horror” is an unofficial name for a 9 km stretch of road in Quang Tri Province. During the Easter Offensive in the Vietnam War in 1972, the People’s Army of Vietnam shelled the South Vietnamese troops and civilians fleeing southward on this road.
At noon on March 30, 1972, the North Vietnamese Army successfully crossed the 17th parallel and launched a fierce attack into South Vietnamese territory. They crossed the Ben Hai River, surged through the demilitarized zone, and launched a massive artillery and human wave assault into Quang Tri Province.
Long Hung Church
Built between 1955 and 1956, Long Hung Church is made entirely of solid reinforced concrete and is associated with the Easter Offensive of 1972. Despite being damaged during the war, Long Hung Church still attracts visitors to the historic land of Quang Tri.
Long Hung Church in Quang Tri is considered a significant historical monument of the counteroffensive against the US-backed South Vietnamese forces to retake Quang Tri. At this church, our soldiers and civilians launched numerous major counterattacks and endured much suffering. These battles were crucial and contributed to the liberation of the Ancient Citadel of Quang Tri after 81 days and nights of fighting.
Doc Mieu Firebase
Doc Mieu Military Base is located in Gio Phong commune, Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province about 7 km South of Hien Luong Bridge. This historical site is quite famous and is considered an “impregnable fortress” during the resistance against the French and the American wars.
It was also known as the McNamara Line, named after a US military commander, aimed at preventing any support from the North and battles in the South. Doc Mieu Military Base was the most important stronghold in this defense line.
Hien Luong Bridge
Hien Luong Bridge and Ben Hai River are located in the group of relics along the banks of Hien Luong at the junction of National Road 1A and Ben Hai River; The North belongs to Hien Luong village, Vinh Thanh commune, Vinh Linh district;
The south belongs to Xuan Hoa hamlet, Trung Hai commune, Do Linh district, Quang Tri province. These are two “historical witnesses” bearing the pain of dividing the country into two South and North regions over 20 years.
Vinh Moc Tunnels
The Vinh Moc Tunnels (Vinh Moc hamlet, Kim Thach commune, Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province) is a military-civilian work during the Vietnam War of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam against the attacks of from the Republic of Vietnam and the United States of America.
The tunnel system existed in the north of Ben Hai River and Hien Luong bridge during the years 1965-1972.
To ensure that hundreds of people eat, and live safely and conveniently, along the tunnel, many apartments are built, each apartment has enough space for three to four people.
In the tunnel, there are three water wells, a hall (with a capacity of 50 people), a clinic, a maternity home, surgery, a Hoang Cam kitchen, rice storage, telephone station.
