Traveling from Hue to Hamburger Hill (A Shau Valley) by private car is a full-day journey into one of the most historically significant battlefields of the Vietnam War. Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your hotel or homestay in Hue. For the best experience, we recommend departing early, as the drive covers nearly 80 kilometers and takes around 3 hours each way.
Your route follows National Highway 49 through remote countryside, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the Co Tu and Ta Oi ethnic communities. Along the way, you’ll enjoy scenic views of lush mountains, rice fields, and peaceful rural villages.
Upon arrival in A Luoi town, we’ll make a brief stop to visit a small house museum displaying war artifacts and remnants related to the A Bia battlefield. Afterward, take time for a lunch break (on your own) before heading toward the base of Hamburger Hill.
Explore the Historic Battlefield
From the foot of the hill, you’ll begin a gradual trek up Hill 937 known as “The Mountain of the Crouching Beast,” which rises to 937 meters above sea level. As you walk, your driver will guide you through key points of interest, including:
- The Helicopter crash site
- The field hospital location
- The Hamburger Hill Memorial
- American fortification remains
- Remnants of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) tunnels and foxholes.
This area bears the scars of the intense fighting that took place during the Vietnam War and is a solemn reminder of its cost. Along the way, you’ll have time to reflect, take photos, and appreciate the remote beauty of the region.
Return Journey and Scenic Stops
After descending the hill, we’ll drive back toward A Luoi, passing through peaceful rural scenery. Keep your camera ready, you might see grazing water buffalo, elders working in rice paddies, corn fields, and acacia forests stretching toward the horizon.
Finally, your driver will return you safely to your accommodation in Hue, ending a memorable Hue to Hamburger Hill, a meaningful journey into Vietnam’s wartime past.

A Bia Hill underwent official explosive ordnance clearance from June 1, 2020, to June 15, 2021, conducted by Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) and funded by the U.S. Department of State. Red and white concrete markers now indicate safe zones. For your safety, please remain within the clearly marked areas during your visit.
