The horrific violence on Vietnam Highway 1, just ten kilometers south of Quang Tri, remains a painful memory for those in Quang Tri and Thua Thien provinces.
Long Hung Church is located south of Quang Tri town on Highway 1A, on the way to Hue City. Built in 1955, the 120m² concrete structure still bears the scars of the 1972 battle. It stands as a testament to the bravery of North Vietnamese forces, who defended it for 81 days against intense attacks from American and South Vietnamese troops using grenades, machine guns, and even warship shells.
Doc Mieu Firebase, a former American military base, is located about 8 kilometers south of the Ben Hai River near Highway 1A. This site played a crucial role in the strategic “McNamara Line.”
Hien Luong Bridge crosses the Ben Hai River, which once divided North and South Vietnam during the war. The bridge symbolizes the country’s turbulent history and the longing for reunification. Nowadays, it stands as a powerful reminder of the past and a symbol of peace and unity.
The Vinh Moc Tunnels in Vietnam DMZ are an intricate underground network built to shelter villagers from intense bombings during the Vietnam War. On the way to Khe Sanh, we will stopovers at Dakrong Bridge – the important branch of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which leads south to the A Shau Valley and the infamous “Hamburger Hill”. Plus, Rockpile Hill (Although it’s inaccessible, it’s a highlight sight from the highway) was a watchtower of the US military to observe the activities of North Vietnam’s Army in the DMZ in Quang Tri Province from 1966 to 1968.
